slightly silly: riverdale, episode thirty-five: brave new world

the season finale is upon us, and we will hopefully put this black hood mess behind us.

except now we have a southside serpent mess. and a weird deatheaters/mob mess. and hiram lodge is becoming the super big bad we always knew he was. which is what still bothers me about the episode that allegedly intimated that hermione was boss.

she's the new mayor, by about 200 votes. so fred andrews continues to be our local lovable loser and good dad. it's still weird to me that mad, bad and dangerous to know dylan mckay ended up becoming the very milquetoast fred andrews. occasionally we get hints that his past has more edge to it, but nothing is ever really revealed and so he's just white bread bland.

archie is not white bread bland, but the character is limited by his portrayer's inability to express real depth. and this mob capo storyline and the black hood stuff has not played to his strengths, other than when we get to look at his washboard abs. archie andrews is a pretty specimen for sure. and of course he is the new student council president. but he's also going to jail soooo, maybe things will get deeper and real-er for arch?

speaking of real, betty is not handling the fact that her father is a serial killer very well. polly pops by to tell us that it's not a big deal or something, but she's also trying to get alice to the farm so maybe the coopers are joining a cult next season and f.p. and jughead need to get their women out.

juggy is a-ok by the way. once cleaned up, his bruises seem to heal themselves at a remarkable pace, and f.p. retires and makes jug the serpent king and jughead makes betty his queen and i don't see how any of this will go horribly wrong next season. also cheryl is a brand new cherry red serpent. i guess because a black jacket wouldn't have suited her aesthetic? but her and toni are still going strong and i'm all for it.

anyway, let's hope season 3 has a more coherent vision.

one last thing about this episode, it's title "brave new world" refers to a movie based on a book by the same name, a science-fiction, dystopian place where people are marked from birth as to their place in society. which is on theme for riverdale. what i love about this title is that it is taken from the tempest, a moment where a sheltered character expresses her amazement at the outside world that has been thrust upon her island paradise.

"o brave new world, that has such people in it!"

see y'all next season.

simply catching up on all things general hospital

hmmm, it's been months since i've blogged about gh . partly this is due to the fact that i fell behind while i was traveling. partly because all the outrage lapsed into disinterest when i realized i couldn't bring myself to care anymore and everything that was happening was just so trite and boring. some days i still feel that way. and there are still whole storylines that i either hate or just fast forward through. but there are some good things too. in no particular order, here are my thoughts on the goings-on in port charles: 1. soras [and why re-casting roles works on soaps even if you do miss the original actors]: the new, older versions of sonny's kids are turning out to be quite enjoyable. [although hilariously, cameron whom i believe is older than molly is now younger. and because cameron is so cute, i'm kind of hoping they won't fix that. we also haven't seen spencer in ages, so he may be approaching 50.] in any case, at this point we've only s...

genre debate: urban fantasy versus epic fantasy: team epic gets their say

Team Epic: Why I Love Epic Fantasy! Since it's my blog, I'll go first: Epic fantasies take you on quests that take you beyond the limits of what is real. The rules can be different, they are different, and everything just matters more. It's not just one life at stake, it's lives, it's a whole world, a whole way of being. Epic fantasies force you to use your imagination and take you on an adventure to places you never thought possible, but as different as everything feels, there are still things that are always real, no matter how you write it. Keep reading to see what a handful of Entangled TEEN authors think about epic fantasies: Erica Cameron - Island of Exiles (The Ryogan Chronicles, #1): Why do I love epic fantasy? It's a blank slate. We can erase all of our preconceived notions of society and law and even science, throwing all of that over the side of a cliff. Epic fantasy lets us push humanity well past the breaking point with ever...
