i'm a patriots fan of many years. not really a bandwagoner, but i moved to boston in 2000 and they've been good since about then. so maybe people won't believe that. i didn't grow up in a place that had a local nfl team. and i grew up watching football with my great uncle, watching for good game more than rooting for any one team. so above all i love the game and i love the pats the most. but i also love the steelers and the packers and the giants to a lesser degree. i dislike a few franchises, but if they are good teams i'll still watch the games, it's bad games i can't stand. and since the browns and the jaguars are so consistently bad, i'm not forced to watch many of their games. but loving football in this day and age requires a compromise of conscience. the nfl as an entity is power mad and greedy. it exploits it's players, first via the ncaa (its unofficial minor leagues) and then via some pretty unfavorable player policies. football is ...

winner takes all kicks off the champion valley series, which i suspect will follow the stories of blake carpenter, brandon west, and cameron shaw, who were the last champions of high school football that blanco valley ever produced. blake carpenter rose the highest, until his career in the nfl was sidelined by knee injuries and accusations of doping. after taking a year off to sulk he returns to football, not quite triumphantly, but it is still the game that he loves. and high school football is better than no football. sparks fly when blake meets annabelle turner, a physical therapist and divorcée who ignores his hostility and makes a point of working with the kids on the team on stretching and conditioning. blake has good reason to be wary of therapists, since he was thrown under the bus by his team and the therapists there in an effort to do everything and anything it took to win and get him back on the playing field. but annabelle is incapable of taking a step back from some...

emily giffin has been on my must buy list ever since i first read something borrowed . it's one of my all time favorite novels , one that i re-read every year. but sometimes i think my love for something borrowed  overshadows the fact that i don't actually love all her books. both baby proof and love the one you're with  spoke to me--they felt like somehow the author had seen into my soul and knew exactly the issues i was struggling with regards to wanting and having kids and even whether or not i should keep thinking about the guy with whom the timing was never quite right. i also really enjoyed the one & onl y , football and complicated romance is right up my alley, though i understand why many people were put off by the ick factor in the romance. if you think about it too hard, it's definitely creepy and not romantic at all. anyway, given these things, and given that i didn't love the alternating viewpoints in heart of the matter  or where we belong , i was ...

oops, again. but, at  least this time it was only a month. so the fall television season is upon us, and i am happy once again. i love spending time with my tv shows. football is also back, and since i am currently watching the giants play the phillys, i'm keeping this post short. i'll be back tomorrow with more.

every fall people come back to something: work, school, something. me, i come back to watching tv. as much as i love watching television, i don't really watch it in the summer. the longer daylight hours make me want to be outside, doing, interacting with the world. i do less of that now with kids, but even so i can't bring myself to watch much television in the summer. of course, this summer there were the olympics. the olympics are the one thing that will have me turn on television and just watch. i dvr'd the opening ceremonies, mostly because i knew that i wouldn't be able to turn the television on until 9 or 9:30--this is the main reason a dvr is mandatory in our home. we'd never watch any 8 o'clock shows if we didn't have one. anyway, so i dvr'd the trippy opening ceremonies and watched every minute except the weird bob costas interviews and awkward meredith viera and matt lauer banter. oh and the ryan seacrest social media updates--what the heck w...

today we give thanks. and there are many things to be thankful for. but i won't bore people by listing all those things. i'm sure i could go on and on. i love many things about thanksgiving, surprisingly not so much the turkey which is fine, but the pumpkin pie, the sweet potatoes, the warmth from the oven, the football games (even though they're terrible this year), the fact that this kicks off the christmas season. anyway, i just thought these things were worth mentioning.
