simply an update about 2019 and this blog going forward

you all probably noticed that in 2019 i was...well, kind of a blogging disaster. life has gotten increasingly crazy, and while i mostly had time to complete all the reading, i often found it hard to find the energy to type up a review that was in any way meaningful. apologies for that, and i aim to improve this in 2020, but i'm not making any promises. other, that is, than reducing my reviewing responsibilities by a significant amount. i do still believe in it, and i want to do it, but i am going to aim to be more selective. i'm also going to continue to cover my clients' books and will always let you know when it is a client's book, both with a disclaimer and a label. there's a lot going on in the industry at the moment, and twitter is really my main time suck these days, and it takes up a lot of my energy. so again, i'm sorry if i'm a little low-energy here. i do hope to picks things back up, get back on track in 2020. but i'm making no resolutio...

simply a girl gone wild with books

last year i set a reading challenge on goodreads. i read a lot. i read quickly. so i challenged myself to 150 books. when i hit my challenge by june, i upped it to 200. here's a snapshot of how i did with that: and it seems as if i am mostly reading books i like. because my average rating was: and here is a selection of the books i read. really there is more variety in there than you might think.  so for 2017 i'm challenging myself to 300 books. we'll see how i do with that.

simply looking back at 2016

i don't know you guys. princess leia died. so did mr. seaver. and mrs. brady. and prince. and george michael. and bowie. and muhammed ali. and so many others. it's the circle of life right. people are born. people live their lives. and then they die. but this year the deaths cut a little deeper. it's like 2016 took the best cultural memories of my childhood and threw them in a disposal, shredded them to bits, so that i cling to crumbs, remembering what i can. holding on to the best moments. holding on to a piece of a song.  personally, 2016 was fine. nothing particularly horrible happened to me personally. there was the summer of gossip which i quite enjoyed. but then. everything took a turn.  the world has always been a place where light and dark co-exist. but in the fall, as the elections neared i felt that darkness creep in closer. and on november 8th, it felt like midnight.  i will always remember sobbing in the shower that night. when i knew in my heart th...

simply the year in review: extremely overdue

the start of the year is always so hectic, you both want to start things fresh, but you have so many things hanging over your head from the previous year. that's why it's always nice to reflect on things. 2009 was a strange year. a lot of celebrities died unexpectedly. life itself has been insanely busy. i traveled so much, that now as i face a year with less travel, i'm not exactly sure what i should do with myself. the nice thing about a new year is that you get to figure it all out. but before i get to that, here's the good, the bad, and the ugly of 2009: the good grey's anatomy's creative resurgence at the end of 2008, grey's had sunk pretty low. izzie was having sex with visions of denny. the show had ceased to be compelling. but then, a turn-around marked by the new year, izzie's cancer storyline went full steam ahead, the character's suddenly grew up, with meredith and derek finally committing to each other in a meaningful way, alex and izzie...

simply the year in review, a bit overdue

i meant to do this earlier, but circumstances beyond my control prevented my posting this any sooner. without more ado, the 2008 year in review... the good true blood and all that is sookie stackhouse i fell in love with the television series and then with the books. i can't believe that i have to wait until summer for the second season and until may for the next book to be released. i fell in love with vampires again, who knew that after "buffy the vampire slayer" and "angel" ended that i would one day be anticipating a show about vampires every week. "true blood" is a lavish production with amazing visuals and a lush sense of ambience. it's a pleasure watching not only for the story, but also for the amazing sense of place that the show gives you. it's like bon temps is real and all the crazy vampire stuff a possibility. gossip girl i can't say enough about "gossip girl" other than it is the best show on television. again a show...
