Michael couldn’t believe he was so lucky. Liz had gone along with the entire evening. He’d been so sure he’d failed miserably, especially when she hadn’t even acknowledged him at first, but then she’d walked back into the room wearing an amazing black dressed and was even now dancing in his arms, her head resting against his shoulder, as if tomorrow didn’t exist and there was nothing else in the world.
The front door slammed and before Michael could react Liz had jumped out of his arms. Staring at the living room doorway apprehensively, as Kyle stuck his head in to see what was going on.
“Hey Michael, sorry didn’t mean to interrupt your date. Where’s Liz?”
Michael was so infuriated by the bad timing, by the look on Liz’s face as she looked at Kyle, by Kyle’s obliviousness to the entire situation, that he grabbed Liz’s face in his hands and gave her a searing kiss before replying.
“Kyle, Liz is my date.”
Michael watched satisfied as Kyle did a double take and ran a hand through his hair.
“Geez, I’m sorry guys. I didn’t mean to interrupt. Um…but since when have you guys…I mean I thought you didn’t get along.”
Michael held Liz’s hand in his, and giving it a slight squeeze responded.
“Oh, yeah, that was our cover. We’ve been seeing each other for a while. We kind of wanted to keep it under wraps. But now that you know, I guess it’s okay.”
“Wow. That’s awesome. I hope I didn’t ruin your date.”
“No. Not at all. Michael and I were just about to call it a night anyway. I have to report to work pretty early anyway.” Liz finally spoke, and giving Michael a speaking look was about to disentangle her fingers from his hold when he pulled her back towards him.
“Baby, what about my goodnight kiss. Kyle won’t mind. He knows now.”
Liz glared at Michael as she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him passionately. Taking advantage of the situation to bite his tongue. Michael groaned at the pain and quickly let her go. He could taste Liz and the metallic tinge of blood in his mouth. He knew he’d deserved it, but they hadn’t set any rules, and no rules meant that he could in theory get away with it. Besides Liz was so sexy when she was angered.
He watched her head to her room with a smile on his face. At least until he heard her say good night to Kyle in her best bedroom voice. Then he frowned.
“So, you and Liz. Why didn’t you guys say anything?”
“Well it started around the wedding. You know we had to spend all that time together helping Alex and Tess with all the preparations, we sort of realized how attracted we were to each other.”
“But you guys argued all the time.” Kyle sputtered.
“Ever heard of foreplay Valenti?”
“Really?” Kyle asked.
“Hey, I don’t kiss and tell.”
Michael shrugged. He didn’t want to get in too much detail without consulting Liz. He had the feeling that that might only make her angrier with him than she already was. Michael was many things, but stupid wasn’t one of them.
“Wow. All this time…and I didn’t even see it.” Kyle shook his head.
“Hey, what had your boxers in a bunch when you got in?”
Michael asked. Hoping that it wasn’t problems with Isabel.
“Ugh. I had an argument with Isabel. She’s so damn uptight about her family. I swear spending the day with her parents was unadulterated hell. She just wanted everything to be perfect.”
“She sounds like a control freak.”
This couldn’t be happening. He had this perfect plan formulated and he absolutely needed Kyle to stick with Isabel.
“Yeah.”
“So you going to call her tomorrow?” How was he supposed to encourage their relationship? He needed to push them together. So his plan could work.
“Yeah. She’s got some awesome contacts; her father is a partner at Vaughn, Abrams and Evans. They’re like my gods.”
“Cool. I’m just going to finish picking this up and turn in. I’ve got three major meeting with clients tomorrow.”
“I hear you. I’m totally jam-packed this week. And Isabel has activities for us all week. So if you don’t see me around, don’t be surprised. Night Michael.”
Kyle waved his hand at his friend.
“Night.”
Michael watched as Kyle went into his room, while he loaded the dishes into the dishwasher. He hoped to hell that things with Isabel and Kyle worked out, because his plan relied upon the fact that those two were definitely together. Not that he understood anyone who would prefer Isabel Evans, a polished but distant beauty, to Liz Parker’s warm and sensual personality, with a gorgeous package to boot. But he wasn’t about to complain. Kyle’s loss would be his gain.

Michael Guerin was going to get his ass severely kicked tomorrow. What had he been thinking, kissing her like that? And then telling Kyle this fantastic tale about how they were in love and had been secretly dating. Honestly.
She’d set him straight on that score.
Michael Guerin would get the fear of an angry Liz Parker instilled in him, if it was the last thing she did.
That kiss had been amazing.
Both of them.
He had tasted so good. Even when he’d plundered her lips in a bruising kiss, he’d been so incredibly tender. She’d responded instinctively. Opening her mouth to his. Letting his tongue slide between her teeth as he explored every crevice in her mouth. She’d done her share of exploring.
In front of Kyle. The nerve of the utter imbecile. She would show him.
But even the way he’d held her face in his hands had been so touching. As if she was the most beautiful and precious thing to him. He made her feel so wonderful.
Had Kyle noticed?
His voice had sounded funny when he asked them what was going on.
Maybe she wouldn’t kick Michael’s ass. Maybe she’d surprise him and kiss him some more. The point had been to make Kyle jealous. And as she recalled Kyle’s reaction to the news, he’d looked as if he’d been gut-punched. Maybe Michael’s plan wasn’t so crazy.
Maybe Michael’s plan was brilliant.
And he was an amazing kisser. Free kisses and Kyle. It was a deal Liz could live with.
Michael Guerin was going to have the most adoring girlfriend tomorrow.
He wouldn’t even know what hit him.
