in emergency attraction, it's been ten years since sinclair smith and shane maguire laid eyes on each other. they were young and in love and promised to stay in touch after he was forced to leave town and enlist.
but he didn't call. he didn't write. at least not immediately. and by the time he did, sinclair wasn't willing to listen. so they each harbor a lot of anger and resentment toward one another, although really most of it comes from sinclair's side. and here's the thing, i totally get why she feels the way she does, except she's also being insanely irrational.
she went through some things. things he didn't know about. and there were reasons he wasn't able to be in touch, but she never bothered to listen to them. and yes, they were too young to know better. but in the intervening ten years, it feels like shane did a lot of growing up while sinclair did not.
but he's still crazy attracted to her. he's halfway in love with her before they manage a civil conversation. and she keeps sending totally mixed signals in a way that makes it pretty clear that it's all a test. she won't listen, won't believe in him until he proves that he is trustworthy again.
the reason he is home is because he is assessing the viability of some resort plans, and when her home is threatened by the plans and the concerns he's raised she is furious. she knows it's not his fault. but she wants him to fix it. she doesn't trust that he can. and all of this is the ultimate test. he needs to get this right for her. he needs to be able to prove that he can stick things through with her.
if they can exorcise the demons from their past, reveal all their secrets and come through the latest crises on the same page, then maybe, just maybe things will work out. sinclair and shane don't have an easy road, she makes it an especially difficult one. but their chemistry and their feelings for each other are stronger than pretty much any obstacle. they just have to let themselves believe that love will win.
