i hadn't read a megan hart book in a while, but i'm so glad i picked up the protector series. set in a not so distant future where a team of soldiers have been artificially enhanced and their status is politicized, dangerous promise, brings together one of the super soldiers and the man who ensured that there would be no further enhancements.
nina didn't ask to be experimented on, but she'd signed away the rights to her dead body when she'd joined the army. she just never expected them to use it in a manner that had her come back to life. and she doesn't hate her life as one of the enhanced. she just wishes that the law wouldn't forbid the upgrades her body needs in order to survive. because the truth of the matter is that she's running on borrowed time.
ewan may be the chief proponent of legislation against enhancements, but he's also the man who came up with the technology. it's just that he didn't realize the ethical problems until too late. now he's being targeted and after losing two security teams finds himself turning to one of the enhanced soldiers he's condemned to death.
but all too soon ewan finds himself wishing that things could be different. he wishes he could admit everything he knows about the enhancements to nina. but he knows that he'd lose her. and the closer they get, the more he doesn't want to lose her. when they are forced to retreat to a secluded mountain cabin to hide out from the threats, they give in to their feelings. ewan finds nina's strength and her ability to dominate arousing. and it's an interesting power exchange to witness.
when everything falls apart, their security, their safe haven, their relationship, it's in part because ewan has kept one too many secrets from nina. but the story isn't over, it can't end where it does, because clearly there is more destined for ewan and nina.
**dangerous promise will publish on january 2, 2018. i received an advance reader copy courtesy of netgalley/st. martin's press (swerve) in exchange for my honest review.
