kinsley has a thing about dating co-workers. given that her last relationship with one ended in a canceled wedding and losing her job, she thinks they are a terrible idea. so when the guy she hits on at her friend's wedding turns out to be her boss, she's beyond mortified. because she needs to be on her game bargaining for the livelihood of her family's hotel and not worried about what happened after she blacked out from all the tequila.

bargaining with the boss is a charming contemporary. damon is bemused by kinsley and the small new jersey beach town he finds himself in. it's a far cry from the flash and glamour of manhattan. and more than that, he's incredibly drawn to kinsley and the creative and inventive way she gets things done. at the same time, he's also weighed down by this intense feeling of inferiority and guilt that he believes makes him a bad bet in the long-term relationship department.

this is baggage he needs to handle before he can be the guy kinsley knows he can be. she believes in him before he believes in himself. and it's the way that their relationship evolves and changes throughout the story, and how they bring out the best in each other that makes it worth reading.
