a young adult story about loss and grief,  switching gears  tackles some heavy subjects. emmy martin is still recovering from the loss of her best friend and the one boy she'd loved forever, lucas nelson. nothing has felt right since his death, even the peace she can find on the bike trails is broken by a string of competitive losses and losing the captaincy of her high school bike team. it doesn't help that the guy she lost the captaincy to, cole evans, is amazing at it. and he's rich and good-looking and he has sponsors. and he keeps seeking her out, she's convinced he's lording it all over her, but emmy's friend harper thinks that he's in love with emmy and that maybe it's time for emmy to move on from lucas. when emmy is blind-sided by her parents' revelation that her mother is suffering from the symptoms of early-onset alzheimer's, emmy feels like everything in her life is out of control. but this loss of control allows cole to somehow...

i'm a patriots fan of many years. not really a bandwagoner, but i moved to boston in 2000 and they've been good since about then. so maybe people won't believe that. i didn't grow up in a place that had a local nfl team. and i grew up watching football with my great uncle, watching for good game more than rooting for any one team. so above all i love the game and i love the pats the most. but i also love the steelers and the packers and the giants to a lesser degree. i dislike a few franchises, but if they are good teams i'll still watch the games, it's bad games i can't stand. and since the browns and the jaguars are so consistently bad, i'm not forced to watch many of their games. but loving football in this day and age requires a compromise of conscience. the nfl as an entity is power mad and greedy. it exploits it's players, first via the ncaa (its unofficial minor leagues) and then via some pretty unfavorable player policies. football is ...

there's something about kasie west's books that i find hard to resist. and by your side  is just another example of the perfect combination of teen angst and romance, but i think it's the fact that her characters are so relatable that elevates her books to the next level for me. autumn collins is your girl-next-door, she gets along with her family, she has a solid group of friend and a cute potential hook-up. her life is following its script and she has nothing to complain about. except in the most improbable way she manages to get herself left behind on a group outing and locked in the town library for the long weekend. the first couple of chapters we see autumn run through the initial panic and fear, and then her desperate attempts to get someone to notice that she's been locked in. when she realizes that she isn't actually alone though, she almost loses it. except then she realizes that she knows who she's been locked in with. dax miller, the juvenile del...

there's something about nik , isn't there? he's a prince to a fictional country called lugenstadt, which seems to be like danish luxembourg. he's terribly stuffy. and he's going incognito at an american boarding school. he's also got a huge phobia of being photographed. mainly because he doesn't want his cover blown. when he meets amber he behaves like he's never met a teenage girl before. he tactlessly points to her hair (cut short only because she is recovering from hodgkin's lymphoma) and it's slowly growing back. plus, he freaks out when he sees her camera. because of course the girl he's going to be paired with loves photography. a lot of the time the characters in historical romance novels don't necessarily behave in ways that are historically accurate. this is very true of the characters in  to tame a wild lady . i was surprised to realize that this was a regency, because given the character's staunch feminism it at least felt mildly victorian, but this was not the case. letting go of the historical accuracy piece is usually not a problem for me, and i did enjoy the novel in spite of the fact that i didn't think the characters were behaving in line with the setting.  lady caroline wilde is horse-mad. she wants to participate in the hunt, something no woman is allowed to do. she's raised and trained her horse all on her own. she's reserved fields of her father's land for her own pursuits, even at the estate's expense. when adrian crosby shows up to take over the estate agent position, caro is instantly attracted to him. he is the by-blown son of the marquess of wyvern, and has ...

the latest installment of the thunder road series, long way home , gives us chevy and violet's story. both of them have grown up in the reign of terror motorcycle gang. their fathers were both members, but they both struggle with living in the gang and its culture and having a normal life. i have to say, i've read each book in this series, and i struggle with the culture. i know we are supposed to see the gang as the heros, but the way being a member of the gang controls the life of everyone involved, even those who didn't choose the life, is so hard to swallow. i have rooted for every one of the guys in the previous novels to leave the gang behind, so i'm sure i'll be disappointed in chevy, even though out of all of them, he stands to gain the most from leaving the motorcycle life behind. he's an all-american guy, the star running back on his football team, someone who has so much possibility if he dares leave the reign of terror behind. but his grandfather...
