slightly silly: riverdale, episode 10: the lost weekend

ok, now this was an episode of riverdale  that i can get behind. the action centers around jughead's birthday. betty, when she learns that it is coming up and that he has never had a birthday party becomes convinced that she must give jughead a party to remember. she does accomplish this goal, but in doing so, kind of causes a whole bunch of tiny explosions. her original plan for the party is to invite only the inner circle, which for some bizarre reason includes ethel. this makes zero sense since esther is a fringe as you could imagine, but whatever. these teens can't keep a secret to save their lives, so when cheryl finds out she is motivated to invite the entire school to archie's place. conveniently, archie's dad has gone out of town to deal with archie's mom and their pending divorce. archie isn't ready for his parents to sign the divorce papers, so he welcomes the kegs that show up along with cheryl and proceeds to get very drunk. a game of secr...

seriously romantic: dusk until dawn by andie j. christopher

it's totally obvious why i keep thinking this is a vampire book, but i know it's not. dusk until dawn  continues the story of the hernández siblings. i had been lucky enough to read the arc for stroke of midnight  and i'm happy i got to do the same for this one. one of my favorite things about this series is that the lead characters that the series is built around are latino. the hernández family is cuban and are pillars of miami society. meanwhile, maya pascual is a puerto rican from el barrío. she and javi first met in school, but he was already dating his now ex-wife, and they weren't crossing any lines. until, of course, one night where maya confessed how she felt about javi. but he had just proposed and so he didn't tell her how he thought she was beautiful and funny and how the sparks between them scared the living daylights out of him because how could it be possible to maintain that kind of passion. he was supposed to lead an exempl...

seriously romantic: love 2.0 by lee kilraine

love 2.0  is the fourth installment in lee kilraine's cates brothers series. this can be read as a standalone though, since i had no trouble following the plot even though i hadn't read the earlier books in the series. kazimir cates, or kaz, is a computer whiz. a well-known hacker, he refuses to play nice with the fbi, but still uses his hacking powers for good. in addition to his online game and the cyber-security contract work he does for private sector businesses, he's also been secretly helping abused women disappear and start over for a while now. mirabel díaz, or mira, is at the end of her rope when she gets to climax, north carolina. she's working a crappy job at an elvis impersonating singing telegram service and sick of running and trying to hide from her ex-boyfriend. she is pretty sure she's id'd kaz as the wizard, her last recourse since she's ready to disappear and hope that her ex won't follow her. but kaz, who has just tangled with the...

seriously romantic: beneath the night by jen colly

i hadn't read the cities below series before  beneath the night , so i wasn't too bothered by all the exposition. though there was a lot of it. maybe this stuff wasn't covered in previous books, i don't know. but there was a moment i was like, i'm 25% into this book, when will things start happening. and okay, stuff had happened, but this is a paranormal romance. the two leads hadn't met until that moment. i am impatient. once they meet navarre and cat are intimately connected. mainly because she's been sent in to feed him, but also because it's pretty clear to everyone except cat that navarre and her are mates, and were fated to meet. i should explain that navarre and cat are both vampires, and he is the ruler of the vampire city of balinese. he's been in a healing sleep for almost seven years, and by chance one of his captains figures out that the reason he has survived this long in stasis is because cat, his soul mate is close by. cat is a g...

lady arabella danvers just wants to care for her wounded animals. her mother thinks it's past time she marry, and she has just the gentleman in mind. but the title of this book is marrying the wrong earl , and it's nash, the earl of clarendon, who gets caught in lady arabella's mother's trap. unfortunately, he was not the intended target. at first arabella resists the idea of marrying nash. they don't know each other at all. she's not interested in being a pillar of society. she wants to care for her animals and nash is horribly allergic to cats. he also doesn't listen when she tells him their marriage isn't going to happen. he commands instead of asks. and this makes her dig in her heels. but digging in her heels gets her nowhere. and when it's apparent that nash is right and their only alternative is to get married she goes along with it. she doesn't really have a choice. nash has no choice either, but he's definitely more gracious ab...

seriously romantic: emergency attraction by samanthe beck

in emergency attraction , it's been ten years since sinclair smith and shane maguire laid eyes on each other. they were young and in love and promised to stay in touch after he was forced to leave town and enlist. but he didn't call. he didn't write. at least not immediately. and by the time he did, sinclair wasn't willing to listen. so they each harbor a lot of anger and resentment toward one another, although really most of it comes from sinclair's side. and here's the thing, i totally get why she feels the way she does, except she's also being insanely irrational. she went through some things. things he didn't know about. and there were reasons he wasn't able to be in touch, but she never bothered to listen to them. and yes, they were too young to know better. but in the intervening ten years, it feels like shane did a lot of growing up while sinclair did not. but he's still crazy attracted to her. he's halfway in love with her bef...
